Will ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ Ever Get A Season Three?

It’s been a year since NBC canceled musical dramedy ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ after two seasons, leaving fans in the dark about whether they’d get to see more of protagonist Zoey Clarke and her “heart songs”.

The series, created by Austin Winsberg, focuses on the titular San Francisco programmer played by Jane Levy. Following an earthquake as she’s doing an MRI, Zoey gains the ability to see and hear other people’s innermost thoughts in the form of Emmy-winning musical numbers, choreographed by ‘La La Land’ choreographer Mandy Moore.

After a fan-led campaign to save the show, ‘Zoey’s’ was given the chance to wrap things up in a Christmas movie on The Roku Channel last December, with the possibility of doing more episodes had that experiment been successful.

At present, there isn’t any official news about the series continuing in some capacity. Yet, it seems like the door might still be open for more Zoey as she navigates grief, love and professional choices together with her loved ones, played by a strong ensemble cast including ‘Pitch Perfect’ alum Skylar Astin, Mary Steenburgen, Peter Gallagher, ‘Gilmore Girls’ protagonist Lauren Graham and ‘Glee’ star Alex Newell.

Creator and writer Winsberg has recently explained that ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas’ does “leave the door open” for more.

“[The film] had to check a lot of boxes, and then on top of that, I didn’t want to treat it like two episodes of the show. I wanted to treat it like an actual movie,” he said in an interview with ‘GoldDerby’.

The showrunner then said he would love to work on other’ Zoey’s’ specials planned around different holidays and big events, from ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Vacation’ to ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Proposal’ and ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Halloween’ and beyond.

“It does feel like it could lend itself to any more of that,” Winsberg said.

“I still feel really connected to the show and the people on the show and the fact that the show got to be comedic and dramatic and musical and all these things that I respond to, and I think the fans responded to,” he said, adding: “I think there’s a lot of places that it could go, especially with more movies.”

The creator also revealed that Levy and other cast members all share the same love for the show and feel the story might have more to offer to the fandom.

“I talked to Jane about it, and I talked to other actors from the show, and we still feel this kind of itch there,” Winsberg said.

“It might be over, but for us, it still doesn’t quite feel like it’s over. We still have emotions and nostalgia and love for it, and we’d love to do more if that opportunity came.”

It’s clear that the entire cast of ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ feels strongly about the show being given the ax. When the series was first canceled last year, its leading lady Levy called out the network.

“I’m sorry, but I have to say this: I look at the new NBC lineup, and it’s like, ‘Okay, we could watch a lot of shows about crime and guns.’ Our show is about love. It’s a real shame to take that off the air… I feel like it’s the wrong move,” she told ‘Vanity Fair’.

She later clarified her comments in a since-deleted tweet, writing: “Woah! internet! My comment about NBC making the ‘wrong move’ was an aside & if you heard me, it was said with a sigh & not to trash.”

She added: “Also my best friend is on an amazing show that at times includes guns and crime. Ok I’m going to float down a river for 4 days bye.”

Her best friend being Mae Whitman, whose NBC show ‘Good Girls’ was also canceled last year.

Astin, who plays Zoey’s best friend and love interest/boyfriend Max Richman, has opened up on filming the Christmas special and whether the series might come back in any form anytime soon.

“No official news,” he said in an interview with ‘Awards Radar’.

“I think that’s the consensus though – it was a big success, Roku’s very happy with it. We were very happy with Roku, so that’s above my paygrade. But they know how quickly I said yes to the first movie, so they know my number,” he said, seemingly confirming he’d be down to reprise the role in a heartbeat.

Following the cancellation, the actor leaned into Max’s arc after he starts hearing “heart songs” in the season two finale, right when he and Zoey become an official couple

“This is something that I even wanted to see more of in season 2, which is them together, because it says a lot about relationships, and the relationship to this power. It’s so meta, the metaphors combine exponentially,” Astin told ‘Entertainment Weekly’ in June 2021.

“I thought it was a really cool storytelling method. And I really love working with Jane and anytime her and I get to do these sequences that are musicals, like in episode 2 of season 2, or in the finale with the John Legend and Pitbull thing, I know we were in for more of that theater, and that as a performer sucks because I was definitely looking forward to that.”

As for a potential season three, Astin said it could have gone “further into [Max’s] family life, most likely meet his mother,” as well as showing Zoey and Max as a couple, “like a couple. Like, it’s decided. It’s no more triangle.”

It might be a bit too late for ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Vacation’ now, but there’s still some time for cast and crew to work on an Extraordinary Halloween or even New Year, praying the Roku gods.
