Will Smith Would Only Punish Jaden Under One Condition

Jaden Smith made quite the fortune as a child actor and no, Will Smith did not touch any of his funds. Instead, Will put an emphasis on using a positive approach to parenting, though given that Jaden tried to get emancipated at 15, we can say this style got mixed results…

In truth, Jaden had a complicated relationship with both his mom and dad, even having issues with certain things about Jada.

Nonetheless, we’re focusing on his relationship with dad Will, and what it was like behind close doors. There was one thing Will took issue with, as Jaden revealed.

Will Smith Took A Positive Approach To Raising Jaden

Will and Jada took a different approach to parenting. It wasn’t about scolding their kids harshly, instead, it was all about keeping a positive atmosphere and allowing Jaden to learn along the way.

“The way that we deal with our kids is, they are responsible for their lives. Our concept is, as young as possible, give them as much control over their lives as possible and the concept of punishment, our experience has been — it has a little too much of a negative quality.”

Jaden echoed that sentiment, stating that his father always told him there really wasn’t anything he could not do, “My parents always told me that I could fly. My parents told me that I could dig a hole to the next side of the earth,” he said. “I would always ask them if I could do things, they would always say yes. They wouldn’t necessarily be like, ‘Here it is!’ When it’s time to go get the shovel it was like, you get the damn shovel. But they would always let me know that you could do that.”

Rarely would Will lose his temper with Jaden, however, there was something Will did not want to hear from his son.

Jaden Would Get Into Trouble If He Said There Was Something He Could Not Do

Will’s way of getting mad with Jaden did not entail any type of scolding or aggression – instead, it would turn into an hour-long talk, as Jaden revealed with Mercury News.

Ultimately, Will did not want to hear that his son could not do something, “My dad would be like, ‘What did you just say, what did you just say?’” Jaden Smith said. “We’d get into an hour-long conversation about how I got into trouble because I said I couldn’t do something.”

At least according to Will, this formula worked for the better, as Jaden was completely fearless during his childhood, “You have to be comfortable doing things that you could fail,” Will said. “Jaden is 100 percent fearless, he will do anything. As a parent it’s scary, it’s really terrifying, but he is completely willing to live and die by his artistic decisions and he doesn’t concern himself with what people think.”

Although Will was a proud dad, Jaden’s words about childhood didn’t exactly sit well with others…

It turns out, Jaden was not interested in hanging around kids his age, instead, he preferred the older generation. Jaden took a bold stance and it didn’t exactly sit well with the fans.

“I am very happy that I spent my childhood with more adults than I did with kids my own age, because I was picking up more things from adults that I were (sic) from kids my own age.”

“I’m just, like, ‘Dude, like, oh my God. Can we talk about the political and economic state of the world, right now?’”

Jaden would further state that he’d rather listen to his parent’s contract negotiations than spend time with children his age. “They would be having a meeting about their next film or something, and they would put me at the head of the table and just make me sit there while they’re talking, debating with all of these people, talk numbers, talk all of this crazy stuff,” he said. “I am very happy that I spent my childhood with more adults than I did with kids my age.”

The statement was met with mixed reactions on platforms like Twitter…
