These Young Adult Books Are Turning Into Movies

The young adult genre has been taking the film industry by storm. Since the early 2000s, adaptations of young adult books have been all the rage. Film series such as Harry Potter and The Hunger Games brought great success for not only the Hollywood companies producing the movies, but also the actors lucky enough to star in the franchises. Nowadays, the industry has also begun creating adaptations of stand-alone young adult books as well due to the welcome addition of streaming services.

There are a lot of movies in the works which will be based on a successful young adult book. Many of these films have been a long time in the making, and fans are overly eager to finally get a visual look at the characters they have fallen in love with. Here are just some of the young adult books turning into films.

8 ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret’ By Judy Blume

Fans are thrilled to finally see an adaptation for is Judy Blume’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Blume published this book back in 1970, so a movie based on the story is a long time coming. Over the years, Blume has turned down numerous offers to turn her novel into a movie. She finally settled with Lionsgate.

The story of adolescence will star Abby Ryder Fortson as Margaret and Rachel McAdams will play her mother. The film is currently set to hit the big screen on April 28th, 2023.


7 Eva Longoria Will Be In Aristotle And Dante Film

The film based on Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe will soon be hitting the big screen! The story is of two Mexican-American boys in the 1980s grappling with adolescence and love. The coming-of-age film will hopefully be released near the end of 2022, but might be delayed until early 2023.

Fans are excited to see Eva Longoria, known for her work the television show Desperate Housewives, and others such as Eugenio Derbez bring these beloved characters to life.

6 ‘All This Time’ By Mikki Daughtry And Rachael Lippincott

Daughtry and Lippincott have done it again. After their success with their adaptation of Five Feet Apart, which starred Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson, they have begun the initial stages of adapting another one of their books.

All This Time, a story about a high school quarterback who loses his girlfriend and starts an odd relationship with an intriguing girl named Marley, was scooped up by Lionsgate. The deal occurred in early 2020, very quickly after the book hit shelves. Fans can expect good things from this film, as the writing duo have proved themselves in creating a hit.

5 Netflix To Make The Wicked Deep

Netflix has made a name for itself in the streaming industry by adapting so many books into films and television shows. Specifically, Netflix has made a point in adapting the young adult genre with shows such as Cursed. Fans have learned to expect great things from the service when it comes to this genre.

The streaming service has snagged Shea Ernshaw’s The Wicked Deep. The story is of three sisters who drowned 200 years ago and now return every summer to haunt their town. The heroine, a young girl named Penny, can see the sisters and must choose a side when they begin luring teen boys to their deaths.

4 A Classic Tale Retold In Rosaline

When You Were Mine by Rebecca Serle takes a classic tale and puts a modern spin on it. The story draws from Shakespeare’s Romeo And Juliet, but is told through the eyes of Juliet’s cousin Rosaline. This is where the film gets its name, Rosaline.

Kaitlyn Dever, known for her roles in Booksmart and Dear Evan Hanson, will star as the witty Rosaline. She has been paired with Kyle Allen, the film’s Romeo. The film will hit Hulu and Disney+ some time in 2022.

3 ‘The Diabolic’ By S. J. Kincaid

Everyone is impatiently awaiting news about The Diabolic adaptation. The sci-fi thriller series, written by S. J. Kincaid, tells the story of a humanoid teenager named Nemesis bred to serve as a bodyguard for a galactic senator’s daughter. When the senator’s daughter is summoned to the Emperor’s court, Nemesis goes in her place. While there, she begins to question her identity as a protector.

Sony Pictures purchased the rights for the young adult series back in 2016. Matt Tolmach is set to help develop the franchise, but nothing else has been said about the upcoming film.

2 ‘Hush, Hush’ By Becca Fitzpatrick

The movie based on Becca Fitzpatrick’s Hush, Hush has been a long time coming. The series is composed of four books and was released from 2009 to 2012. Readers fell in love with the angelic characters and rooted for characters Nora Grey and Patch Cipriano to end up together.

A film adaptation of the story has been teased for years. The main characters were cast back in 2018, but not a lot of news has been released about the upcoming movie. Kellie Cyrus, who made a name for himself as a director for show The Vampire Diaries, will direct. Supposedly the film will be released on Paramount+ some time this year, but it has not been given a specific release date.

1 Joey King To Star In Netflix’s Uglies

Scott Westerfeld’s book series Uglies has been a long-time favorite of young adult readers. The series first hit bookstores in 2005 and had three follow-up books. The concept of the series is a society which forces 16-year-olds to undergo surgery to conform them to the accepted standard of beauty. Fans are overjoyed to finally see these characters come to life.

Even more exciting is the fact that Joey King will star as Tally Youngblood in the Netflix film. She actually is the reason behind the film finally getting made. King revealed how she brought the young adult book to Netflix and she will be producing the movie.
